The number of players entered in a
tournament is affected by the tournament rules that
set the size of the final cut. The size of the purse
has little to do with attracting the best players.
In fact
the tournament with the second largest purse had a
net spread for the total of the final 2 rounds
as large or larger than 16 other tournaments
with smaller purses in 2002.

This chart shows the number of
players each tournament attracts. The various
tournaments control the number of players in the
final rounds by setting entrance rules and the final
cut number. The chart is sorted by the size of
the purse. Yes, I know it is hard to see the hollow
column, but it is the best I can do for a secondary
axis.
